Buying a used Porsche shouldn't feel like a gamble. But it usually does.

You've got 30 tabs open. Bring a Trailer, CLASSIC.COM, dealer sites, three forums. Every listing says "well maintained." Every forum thread disagrees with the last one.

You're not sure what the car is really worth, because asking prices are just hopes. 03 Why I built this

I learned to buy cars from my dad.

I've always been around cars. My family has been in the car repair business for two generations, and growing up, my friends and I were always buying, fixing and selling them.

My dad is very good at picking out a good car and even better at negotiating for it. I learned by watching him do it.

I found the right Integra GS-R in Las Vegas, flew out from San Diego, checked it over and drove it home. I kept it a year, had a great time with it, and still sold it for a profit.

That's what I want to help you do: find a great car, pay the right price, and enjoy it without regrets. A Porsche is an expensive place to learn the hard way.

04 Who I am

Not a dealer. Not a broker. A buyer, on your side.

I'm Joe, and I run Renn Driver, a Porsche site with guides on every 911 generation, the IMS bearing, the M96 engine and model-by-model buying. I've bought and sold a lot of cars over the years, especially manuals, and I usually get good deals.

I'm not a professional mechanic, but I fix cars. I've done engine swaps, clutch jobs and conversions, and brought totalled cars back to the road. So I know what a "small job" really costs, and which problems a seller would rather you didn't notice.

The final mechanical call on any car you buy still comes from an independent Porsche shop that inspects it in person. My job is to get you to the right car and the right shop, with the right questions, and to help you pay the right price.

Before you ask

Which Porsches do you cover?

Water-cooled 911s (996 onward), Boxsters, Caymans, Cayennes, Macans and Panameras. Air-cooled, GT, race and heavily modified cars need specialist eyes, so ask first and I'll tell you honestly if I'm the right fit. Sold-price data is strongest for US cars.

Do I buy the car through you?

No. You buy directly from the seller. I don't sell cars or take a cut, so I'm only on your side.

Is this a mechanical inspection?

No. I don't see the cars in person. I help you decide which cars deserve an inspection and what the shop should check. Always get an independent pre-purchase inspection before you buy.

What if I don't buy within 60 days?

The 60 days start when you pay. If you need longer, we'll talk.

Can I upgrade later?

Yes. If you start with a Buyer Report and move to the full Buyer's Advocate, I'll take the $97 off.
